Size it from the room, not the table. Allow about 90cm of clear space on every side so chairs can be pushed back and people can walk behind them. For seating, budget roughly 60cm of table edge per person — a 180cm rectangular table comfortably seats six, eight at a push.
Round tables suit smaller and square rooms and are far better for conversation, since nobody is stuck at a corner. Extendable designs earn their keep in homes that host occasionally but do not want a permanently oversized table.
