Hanging a mirror is the fastest fix for a room that feels dark or small, and unlike art it never clashes with the scheme.
Height is where most people go wrong. Centre the mirror at about eye level, roughly 145–150cm from the floor to its middle. Above a console or sideboard, leave about 15–20cm between the furniture top and the frame, and keep the mirror narrower than the piece below it.
Round and arched shapes soften rooms full of square edges, which is why they work so well above rectangular consoles. Rectangular mirrors bring formality and suit symmetrical arrangements.
