Mount them at about 160–170cm beside a door, and use a pair either side where the entry is wide enough — it reads far more deliberate than a single light off to one side. For a garage or driveway, higher mounting spreads light further.
Weather rating is not optional. Look for IP44 as a minimum under cover, and higher where the fitting is fully exposed. Coastal homes should prefer marine-grade or powder-coated finishes, as salt air will find any weakness in a cheap coating.
